Can 'The Help' Win Best Picture?
For the last month, Oscar season has been dominated by one presence: Uggie the dog "The Artist," the presumed Best Picture frontrunner thanks to a bevy of awards season plaudits. Following the Screen Actors Guild Awards on Sunday night, that conversation changed: Could "The Help" -- buoyed by SAG wins from Viola Davis, Octavia Spencer and the entire cast -- unseat "The Artist" atop the Oscar heap? Short answer: probably not. Despite the strong showing during the SAG Awards, "The Help" is facing a herculean task in its charge for Best Picture. "'The Help' wasn't able to score a single nomination in other branches," wrote Grantland's Oscar guru Mark Harris, "so where is the Best Picture support going to come from?" Translation: "The Help" didn't earn nominations from the directors' branch, writers' branch or editors' branch. If it wins Best Picture, "The Help" would be the first film since "Grand Hotel" in 1930 to win the award without being nominated for either Best Director, Best Screenplay or Best Editing. As if historical precedent weren't bad enough, the stars of "The Help" are still swatting away accusations that the film is racist. After her SAG award win on Sunday night, E! Online's Ted Casablanca asked Viola Davis why it took a white woman to effect change within the black community -- which is what happens in "The Help" when Skeeter (Emma Stone), a journalist, attempts to get the help's side of the story. "Great, thanks for the loaded question," Davis responded. She continued by saying that while she saw merit in his query, it wasn't exactly appropriate. "[Y]ou have to wonder why someone would ask this question." Casablanca didn't understand what Davis was getting at, "exactly" and revisited his point about needing a white author to "get the job done." The actress explained that despite the protagonist's involvement, "it is the black women who risked their lives in this movie." "Like I said," Davis smiled, "it's a loaded question." Certainly is! But it's one Oscar voters might find themselves asking when they go to choose Best Picture. [via E!, Grantland]

He’s quite the dashing itineration of James Bond 007, and Daniel Craig is featured in a new still image released from the upcoming “Skyfall.”
The picture depicts Craig as the iconic British spy on a mission in Shanghai, and he looks like he means serious business.
According to a report, “Skyfall” sees “Bond’s loyalty to M tested as her past comes back to haunt her. As MI6 comes under attack, 007 must track down and destroy the threat, no matter how personal the cost.”
“Skyfall” is directed by Sam Mendes and stars Javier Bardem, Judi Dench, Ralph Finnes, and Albert Finney. It hits theaters on November 9th, 2012.

Brad Pitt Brings Jonah Hill For a Taping of Inside the Actors Studio
Brad Pitt arrived at Pace University for a taping of Inside the Actors Studio with James Lipton tonight. He was joined by Moneyball costar Jonah Hill for the NYC outing, which comes after a big weekend in LA. Brad and Jonah attended the SAG Awards, where both actors were up for honors. Neither took home a win, but it was still an exciting night that saw plenty of PDA between Brad and Angelina Jolie. Brad's pal George Clooney also hit the red carpet since he was nominated for best actor in The Descendants. The movie was a topic of conversation when George's own episode of Inside the Actors Studio aired this evening. In the interview, George touched on pranking Brad, which Brad himself should be able to comment on now that he's taking the stage to answer questions from James.

"It used to be about trying to do something," she says in an earlier scene. "Now it is about trying to be someone." A quote from Meryl Streep as Margaret Thatcher in The Iron Lady. When I heard it, I thought to myself, I've never heard a truer statement. Parents today could do well to incorporate a little more Iron Lady and a little less Oprah in their child rearing practices. I think of the "self-esteem movement," where an army of well-meaning educators, mental health professionals and authors convinced parents that in order for your kid to function happily in the world, you needed to make them feel good about themselves, even if it was absent any measureable accomplishment. As a result we were quick to pronounce every fingerpainting a Picasso, we stopped keeping score at soccer games and gave trophies to kids just for showing up. We told ourselves and our children they were marvelous, just because they breathed. We shielded them from criticism and praised them for the most meager of accomplishments. 20 plus years later, here's the science -- it didn't help grades, or career achievements or relationships. Instead it produced a generation or two that feels entitled to reward without putting in real work. With some exceptions, we produced a generation without grit. When people who have been overpraised through life hit a real challenge, they panic or quit. They can't manage frustration and they don't know how to handle challenging situations constructively. Other outcomes of the self esteem movement were that it produced people who were either scared to death of taking action, or didn't think they should have to bother. Real self esteem comes from real achievement. It can't be bestowed on someone through empty praise. It's not enough just to participate, you need to excel in something. You need to try, fail, try again, fail again and repeat and improve until you have mastered a skill or a task. It isn't about self esteem, it's about self mastery. We worried too much about how our children felt, and not what they could do. In the old days parents would be driving their kid home from little league saying, "when you struck out, you didn't keep your eye on the ball". Now they say "The ump robbed you." Oprah talked a lot about people's feelings. The Iron Lady? Not so much. Here's another quote. This said in response to a doctor suggesting to an elderly Mrs. Thatcher that, given her circumstances, she is bound to be feeling miserably: "What? What am I 'bound to be feeling?' People don't think anymore. They feel. 'How are you feeling? No, I don't feel comfortable. I'm sorry, we as a group we're feeling... ' One of the great problems of our age is that we are governed by people who care more about feelings than they do about thoughts and ideas. Thoughts and ideas. That interests me. Ask me what I'm thinking."

'Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol' reportedly cost $145 million to make, plus tens of millions more for prints and advertising, while 'Young Adult' cost a reported $12 million to make and spent a fraction of the Tom Cruise spectacle's cost on marketing. Yet both movies have the same ticket price at your multiplex. In fact, uniform pricing has been the policy at American movie theaters for 40 years, and hardly ever does anyone think to ask why.

Closing out the weekend with a midday fete, Charlize Theron was glistening in green at Variety's Indie Impact Award & 10 Directors to Watch brunch at Le Parker Meridien in Palm Springs, California on Sunday (January 8).
Presented by Mercedes-Benz as part of the 23rd Annual Palm Springs International Film Festival, the Oscar-winning actress gave a short speech while mingling with fellow guests such as Patton Oswalt and Shailene Woodley.
The appearance follows a big night the previous evening for Miss Theron, as she joined Oswalt, as well as her "Young Adult" director Jason Reitman and writer Diablo Cody in accepting the Vanguard Award for Creative Ensemble during the festival's awards gala.
Charlize spoke with press at the event about why she was drawn to play her character of Mavis Gary in the film, saying, "She's troubled. As we all are, right? I mean, I just saw great potential... she felt very real to me. Green Goddess Charlize Theron's Impact Brunch
Closing out the weekend with a midday fete, Charlize Theron was glistening in green at Variety's Indie Impact Award & 10 Directors to Watch brunch at Le Parker Meridien in Palm Springs, California on Sunday (January 8).
Presented by Mercedes-Benz as part of the 23rd Annual Palm Springs International Film Festival, the Oscar-winning actress gave a short speech while mingling with fellow guests such as Patton Oswalt and Shailene Woodley.
The appearance follows a big night the previous evening for Miss Theron, as she joined Oswalt, as well as her "Young Adult" director Jason Reitman and writer Diablo Cody in accepting the Vanguard Award for Creative Ensemble during the festival's awards gala.
Charlize spoke with press at the event about why she was drawn to play her character of Mavis Gary in the film, saying, "She's troubled. As we all are, right? I mean, I just saw great potential... she felt very real to me. Jason and I when we first talked we said to each other, a lot of times there's this feeling when you read a script they're movie people, they're not real people. And there was something about her that felt very real to me."

Drug-Free Demi Lovato Hits Up "Sober Is Sexy" Soiree
Venturing out for a alcohol and drug free evening on the town, Demi Lovato was among the stars turning up at the Lexington Social Club in Hollywood on Saturday night (January 7).
The red-haired "Skyscraper" singer was on-hand for the Tinseltown nightspot's "Sober is Sexy" t-shirt party, with fellow guests including Rumer Willis, Danielle Panabaker, Levin Rambin, Lyndsy Fonseca and Chris Masterson.
The fun-filled "Sober is Sexy" fete comes just after Miss Lovato spoke with Seventeen magazine about how she now finds clean parties to be more hip than getting wasted.
The 19-year-old dished, "I think sober is sexy. It's cool. I think it's way cooler to be above the influence than under the influence."
Demi added, “I don’t drink, I don’t do drugs, I don’t throw up after my meals, I don’t starve myself. There’s nothing that I do that I feel ashamed of.”
